Here is our Itaewon Class Korean drama review based on first impressions. Itaewon Class is in its second week and going strong with very high ratings in the Friday and Saturday time slots. Now onto our Korean drama review for Itaewon Class.
Runtime: Fridays & Saturdays
Cast: Park Seo-joon, Kim Da-mi, Yoo Jae-myung, Kwon Nara
Where to watch: Netflix
Netflix picked a great time to air “Itaewon Class”. In Korea, Winter is slowly leaving us and Spring is right around the corner. If nothing else, “Itaewon Class” brings to mind a familiar feeling — love in the air, the breathtaking colors of Spring, and the raw endless possibilities of youth.
Park Sae-Ro-Yi’s (Park Seo-Joon) world is one of innocent love whilst in the turmoil of standing up for what he believes in. Known for being socially inept, Sae-Ro-Yi fights hard for those who are bullied and instinctively helps others without another second of thought.
When Sae-Ro-Yi punches Jang Geun-Won (Ahn Bo-Hyun) for bullying another student, awkward apologies ensue from the principal and teachers of Gwangjin High. Jang Geun-Won is the son of CEO Jang Dae-Hee who runs a large restaurant company. The school and its teachers work at the beck and call of the Jang family. When CEO Jang demands an apology from Sae-Ro-Yi for punching Geun-Won, Sae-Ro-Yi refuses, affirming that he can’t bring himself to apologize to a bully. Sae-Ro-Yi’s father, Sung-Yeol also refuses to apologize. Instead, Sung-Yeol praises his son for doing what Sae-Ro-Yi believes is right.
I loved their perception of life. The first episode was littered with golden truths. Just watching the first episode, “Itaewon Class” provides a refreshing outlook on hardships, family and love as it follows a familiar trajectory of K-drama plots. One quote I found particular meaningful, “as long as we are alive, nothing is a big deal” hits hard especially for Sae-Ro-Yi as he realizes what are the things that truly matters in his life and what are those that can be let go.
Looking forward to the rest of the series. We’ll be doing a series review after the drama finishes airing!
